Co-Creation: A Win-Win for Local Partners and USAID

In Guatemala, USAID’s Central America Regional HIV Program took a significant step toward localization in 2020 when it awarded its first local award to the Pan American Social Marketing Organization (PASMO). In a previous blog post, we delved into PASMO's inspiring journey as a local partner, shedding light on the resources, challenges, and insights that paved their path to prime partnership with USAID. Below, we look at the co-creation process and how it addressed the challenges faced by local organizations looking to partner with USAID. As a result of a co-creation workshop held in December 2022, two local organizations stepped into prime roles for the first time. Now, local organizations are implementing 78 percent of the HIV program’s projects.

The Team Sayari Partnership: Mixing Global and Local for Success

Just outside Nairobi National Park, down a bumpy, dusty road, sits WildlifeDirect’s Wildlife Warriors Field Lab. While currently the camp is composed of several temporary structures and tents, WildlifeDirect, a Kenyan non-governmental organization, has a vision: to use the power of filmmaking, media, and education to shape the next generation’s attitudes and behaviors around Africa’s environment and wildlife.

USAID’S Local Capacity Strengthening Policy: Local Context Matters

I use a quote in my email sign-off that’s a blend of others. It encapsulates what I’ve seen over the years: “Helping a community help itself might not change the whole world, but it could change the world for that community.”

Learning and Networking at USAID’s Local Partner Resource Days in India

At a USAID-hosted event for new local partners in Mumbai in April, the large, carpeted conference room buzzed with excitement. Representatives of participating organizations, who were grouped at tables by field of expertise to facilitate networking, talked excitedly with one another and even had to be reminded to take lunch and tea breaks.

USAID/Nepal Hitting the Road for Localization

When USAID/Nepal’s Mission Director, Sepideh Keyvanshad, heard about the Localization initiative announced by Administrator Power in November 2021 to direct a quarter of USAID funding to local partners, she believed that USAID/Nepal could increase it to 40 percent. What started as an Agency-wide goal for shifting power to local actors and strengthening the capacity of local organizations became a critical focus for the team in Nepal.
